I bought the Ishizawa Lab Keana Rice Masks recently from a local grocery store, and as soon as I opened them, I was hit in the face with a really pungent smell of gasoline.
I read online that these shouldn’t contain any fragrance and should have a slight rice wine scent if anything. Does anyone know what happened to my face masks? Did something happen to them during shipping? I used one of them, but the smell was so strong it gave me a headache.
I want to keep using these since I heard good things about them 😭 Any advice?

That’s not normal you probably shouldn’t use it. I bought two of these and both smelled faintly of rice wine
These should not have any smell, this sounds concerning.
Idk if I would keep using them, because I have been using these for a few months now & recently repurchased them online and they all smelled like rice to me, never gasoline. I wouldn’t trust that anywhere near my face 😅
I bought a few packs of this masks from Japan and they all have a very slight alcohol smell (rice wine?) and that’s about it. Nothing strong.
Yours might be expired or bad batch. They should smell like rice/rice water.
Um mine do not smell like that. They have kind of a sake smell to them
They should kind of smell like sake, which IMO doesn’t smell anything like gasoline. Maybe you have a bad or counterfeit batch?
Oh no, that’s not good! Ask another person to smell them as well and see if they get the same aroma just to be sure there’s not something else interacting with the scent for you directly.
If they also think it smells anything other than at most lightly fermented bland rice water, then I would not use them.
I’m guessing they were exposed to high heat, or there is a small preforation in the packaging which you will be able to tell if you squeeze it, and there is no air gap inside.
They should be very moist and a medium thick almost aloe like serum on them as well. To compare to what you received.
I bought this in Japan and am using it nightly and it does not have a smell!

Have you had Covid recently? That might be affecting your sense of smell. I’ve used these masks before, and like other commenters said, it doesn’t have much of a smell – maybe a light rice or sake smell, but not a strong gasoline smell.
Have someone else smell it. If they agree it smells like gasoline, I would discard.

expired or bad batch. happens sometimes, has happened to me even with yesstyle! Got a mini beplain mungbean oil cleanser and it was cloudy, white (not green like usual) and smelled like pure gasoline.
Not me seeing this right after I ordered a pack 😂😭 but based on other comments yeah you may have a bad batch

Mine don’t smell like that at all. I bought them many times over the course of 5 years and they have always smelled like Sake.

you might have a defective one or bad one because i have both that one and paste and it has no smell
Every time I have purchased these (online and in store many many times over the years) they have smelled like gasoline to me….

I can see rice wine smelling kinda gasoline-y. But I don’t drink, so all alcohol smells toxic to me.
It’s because it’s fermented so it’ll give off a pungent smell!
that’s not normal. maybe expired or it dpends on the ingredients. some is smells like aloe vera
Ive always wanted to try these masks because of the cute packaging but my skin is so sensitive that I’ve avoided all this time for fear of breakouts ..
I also have a lot of products from this brand but they smell nothing like gasoline. They smell like rice

I have noticed a strong smell once I put a new one every time . I am very sensitive to smells and it makes me cough a little because of how strong it is. Same goes for nail polish even tho it’s not the same smell. The smell from the mask does eventually go away after a few mins after putting it in my face. I bought mines in Japan tho.
I got this a couple of weeks ago and mine does not smell like gasoline. It almost smells like nothing.
