(I already tried to post this, but I don't think it worked… sorry if it shows up twice!)

TLDR; Video shows Emily de Molly Dark Static (L), Cracked Lahar (C), and Cracked Scorchy (R). 3 coats each plus QDTC. Indirect sunlight.

I did some research for y'all! Jk… it was mainly to satisfy my own curiosity… but I want to share!

I first fell in love with Lahar (by Cracked polish), but it was out of stock. I was later browsing Emily de Molly and came across Dark Static, which I also loved, and bought it. When Lahar was back in stock, I still wanted it. I could tell it was similar to Dark Static, but I didn't know HOW similar, and I decided to find out for myself. I bought Lahar (and also Scorchy, because I've seen some amazing images of Scorchy on this sub).

When I was looking for comparisons of the two polishes online, I couldn't find any… so here's mine!

The video shows Dark Static on the left, Lahar in the middle, and Scorchy on the right, in indirect sunlight (indoors next to a glass door). There are 3 coats of each, plus a quick dry top coat. I magnetized all of them the same way for the same amount of time.

The results: The base colors are different, but not very different. The purple leans blue, and the blue does lean a little purple in some light.

The clearer difference imo (which was visible in swatch photos but even clearer IRL) was the size of the magnetic particles. They're basically identical in color/shift, but Lahar has larger, more glittery particles that don't seem to magnetize quite as sharply compared to Dark Static.

I think I like Dark Static better because it's a little more dramatic, and I love that in a magnetic polish. Lahar is also gorgeous, and while it's basically a dupe, I'm not rushing to get rid of it……

I included Scorchy because it seems to have a similar color scheme to the others in the bottle/ in some swatches. While it does have a VERY similar color and shift (is it the same magnetic bits as Lahar, without the base color??) it's clearly a topper that will be majorly affected by whatever is underneath.

  1. The more I look at the photos, the more it looks to me like Scorchy is Lahar without the base pigment. I bet it would be pretty easy to dupe Lahar by putting Scorchy on top of a purplish base…..
