Sheer “Black” Lip Products Pt. 2 – Swatches and Short Reviews

## Why Sheer Black Lip Products?

My skin tone is cool and muted but my lips tend to pull brighter and more orange, sheer black lip products help mute my lips and make them look more cool-toned. There’s also the appeal of being slightly alt. They also just make me happy and I need some happiness right now.

And my favorite was the Lummir, mostly because it was moderately moisturizing and wasn’t purple but I did note it needed to be evened out on application and the amount of glitter was odd.

## General Disclaimer

I bought all products with my own money from Beauty Box Korea, swatches were taking outdoors in natural light, my skin is pale, cool, and muted. I WILL NOTE – the apostrophes around black in the post title are doing some heavy lifting but since all of these products have “black” in the shade names I’ll review them as such. I thought about doing lip swatches but everyone in the U.S. government has conspired to give me stress acne so that won’t be happening, sorry!

**TIPTOE Jelly Stick**

– Shade: #005 Mood Black

Favorite of the bunch, and of all the products I’ve tried. No strong or purple undertone, goes on very evenly, buildable to an extent. The worst thing I can say about this is the formula isn’t very moisturizing but it’s not drying, it also isn’t scented to my nose. If you have issues with plumping products this one doesn’t have any plumping properties. If you want to buy a sheer black lip product I’d recommend this one!

**Romand Glasting Melting Pot**

– Shade: #02 Black Berry

Least favorite of the bunch. To be fair I wasn’t expecting much, I ordered it before the Blackberry JLT came out because I wanted to try a black lip product from Romand lol. This isn’t bad per se, but the formula feels almost exactly like vaseline so it didn’t wow me. Very nice true gray color though. I have the same gripe with the Lummir that I do with this one: just an odd amount of glitter, feels like it should have more or none at all. Fruity smell, color is even when applied.

**AOU Glowy Tint Balm**

– Shade: #13 Prune Balm

Really lovely formula, very glassy and moist-looking. Decently moisturizing but not more than a light lip balm. No plumping properties or scent. I see why people like these balms, the effect is very pretty, but unfortunately as a black lip balm it comes off as a very sheer purple. I can see this being great when mixed to mute other AOU Glowy Tint Balms but as a sheer black balm I prefer the TIPTOE. I would try the formula in other colors though!

**TWO SLASH FOUR Glaze Lip Changer**

– Shade: Nu Black

Another purple! Similar to the Nature Republic Honey Melting Lip formula (somewhat sticky lip balm texture that stays on well) but slightly less moisturizing, plumping, and sticky (also a click balm). This isn’t to say it’s bad, I liked the Nature Republic so I like this. Has a light minty smell. I wouldn’t repurchase it in Nu Black because I’d rather buy the Nature Republic in Mood Black because of the TWO SLASH FOUR’s purple color, but I like the formula enough I’d consider buying color(s) that don’t have a dupe in the Nature Republic Honey Melting Lip range.

**HEART PERCENT Dote On Mood Dewy Melting Lipstick**

– Shade: #07 Dewy Black

Another purple! Pros: beautiful, glassy formula and most “melty” effect on the list, nice plumping effect, fairly moisturizing too. Cons: strong chemical smell and the applicator isn’t right for the formula (I keep losing product on the side of the applicator because it’s so melty, this would benefit from jar or squeeze tube packaging). The smell is strong enough to put me off wearing it. Feel like I would give this a wholehearted recommendation if it didn’t have a strong scent and had a better applicator. Also the lip balm with the least product on this list, so it isn’t very cost-effective.

## Some Thoughts After Trying Ten Different Blackish Lip Products

Lots of black lip products are actually purple, which is a little annoying to me. I imagine the purple undertones are helpful to either mute warmer lip products or mute warmer lip colors, but I’m still disappointed. My least favorite (and the one I’d consider the worst) is still the TonyMoly, followed by the FWEE, both formulas are very uneven in different ways and can’t be evened out, I actively recommend against buying them. I liked the Lummir for color and moisture in my last review but I’d actually move it to the bottom half of recommendations now as I don’t think the formula is as elegant as most of the products reviewed here (and the TIPTOE is a better alternative).
