All my nails tend to grow completely fine. Except for the middle nail on my left hand. It kinda just collapses on itself halfway through and stars curving upwards into the nail bed. It’s always grown like this and honestly it’s getting infuriating. Any ideas?

If it matters, I used to bite my nails off, but I stopped well over a year ago. Almost two now I think.

    Are you a lefty?

I used to be a biter, quit menu years ago for the most part.

I’m a lefty and this is where the pen sits on my finger when I write.

Even if I use “enhancements” or overlays, when I cut them down and remove them, it continues to grow like this.

Sometimes it’s trauma and sometimes it’s just how our nails grow due to how we use our hands/genetics.

1-2 years isn’t a very long time for nails since it takes ~5-6 months for a nail to completely grow out. Damage takes time to repair. I got hand foot mouth from my toddler 1.5 years ago and a couple nails were impacted. Even though the nail looks healthy, they both start to split once they get to a certain point.

I bit my nails for a long time until I finally kicked the habit as an older teen. It took a few years for my peeling nails to recover.

My nails do this on both hands, and it’s worst on my index and middle fingers. I assume it’s just a genetic quirk because I can’t find any other causes.

I’ve been using Nailtiques 2 after cutting my nails short and it seems to be helping so far. They aren’t super long yet, but they haven’t started curving either.

I have a nail that does this too! It started when my dog bit me right on my left ring finger cuticule while playing and it started growing like that, it’s been maybe three years since that happened. Maybe you hurt your cuticule in that area and didn’t see it at the time?

  5. My middle nail on my left hand does exactly the same thing. I used to be a nail biter, but I stopped about 10 years ago, I do pick at my cuticles at times, though, so it could be trauma like another commenter said.
