How do I get a specific “embedded gem” look?

I'm a novice at doing gel nails, and I've noticed a current theme of "embedded gem" kind of look? I'm not sure if I'm referring to it correctly.

I was curious how they achieved that look, is it some sort of thick gel overlay?
