Hi. I had builder gel on my nails for like a month. They grew out pretty long and I bent my index finger nail and it totally bent and I had space between the builder gel and the nail.

I got the gel removed today. I don’t understand why she filed the nail beds down so badly.
šŸ™ they hurt and also I don’t understand what she put on to remove the builder gel. She painted it on like a polish and the nails started bubbling and I got a tiny bit of it in my arm and it burned my arm like I was getting bit by an ant!! What was that??

Oh dear, never return to this salon, and tbh I would leave a bad review and report them to any local regulatory agency you can.

What they used are called ā€žburstā€œ removers and afaik, the really fast ones like you describe are all made with an illegal & banned ingredient: methylene chloride.

There’s currently [an ongoing FDA recall](https://www.fda.gov/consumers/health-fraud-scams/cosmetic-products-containing-methylene-chloride) around these products, but this is by no means an exhaustive list. It’s terrible enough that these products are sneaking into the consumer market, but for licensed professionals to use them is inexcusable.

Methylene chloride is very toxic, but don’t panic. Your exposure wasn’t ideal, but it was still a negligible amount in the grand scheme of things. I was also exposed years ago at a salon that did the same thing. A handful of accidental exposures over a lifetime is extremely unlikely to have any long term impact.

Edit to add: if you’re concerned, poison control is free to call and seek professional advice in the U.S. and many other countries, but the toxicity with low exposure like this is more of a concern if it were chronic or prolonged.
