Hello nail techs,

I naturally struggle to be chatty around people I don't know well.

My nail appointments usually last about 1,5 hours, and I am pretty much silent during the entire time. I might chat a bit if my nail tech starts conversation, but I really struggle to keep it alive. Sometimes I even start conversation but it always kinda falls flat.

I feel like this might be really unpleasant to her and I feel quite embarassed about it.

Is being silent ok or do you prefer talkative clients?

Btw this is the last set we did and I absolutely love it and can't stop staring at my nails😍

  1. I like silent service- I don’t like talking about my personal life with a stranger. I bring my AirPods Max and zone out

My nail artist is very shy and introverted, and I LOVE IT. I usually just read a book on my Kindle app and I wait for her to finish the set.

I’m not a nail tech but, as a frequent client, I don’t feel like it’s my job to entertain the technician. I feel the same way about hair stylists. As long as you’re maintaining basic human decency, you as the paying customer get to set the tone.

My own job requires me to talk to people all day (speech therapist) so I prefer to be quiet when I’m getting my nails done. I bring my Kindle. I politely engage if the tech asks a question but I’m not stressing over initiating.

Not a tech, but I am a client and also get lots of other services like waxing and tattoos. My tattoo artist does something that I think is amazing. In her booking intake form she has you select what level of talking you prefer, ranging from “totally silent” to “heavy conversation”. I wish more professionals would do this, because while I am a yapper, I’m not always feeling it, and I love being able to just already be on the same page when I walk in.

My nail tech is a grouch. Hes known to just be sarcastic, quiet and brooding and I love him. When customers try to chat with him its hilarious because everyone knows he hates it, except the customer. I would say every 3 services he and I will have an actual conversation. Its one of the reasons why I adore him. I personally struggle when “relaxation techs” – nails, facials, massage want to have a full on conversation with me. I want to be pampered, and silent.

I’m a quiet client. If a service provider asks me a question, I will politely answer, but I’m not starting any serious conversations. I love just relaxing and thinking or reading during a service, and I like allowing the service providers space to cook.

as a nail tech who is naturally quiet there is a feeling of relief whenever a client doesn’t want to talk at all lol. i love my talkative clients down but it’s nice to just get through a set and not have to come up with things to talk about, that can be exhausting.

your nails are perfect by the way!
