Hit my aesthetic rock-bottom while travelling, walked my nubs into a random place and asked for Gel-X. First time getting any extension service in my life.
I asked for – and got – short extensions. Look totally great (not a ski jump situation) except for the huge crescent-shaped filled-in gaps between my natural nail and the extension, which is course is more noticeable with the length. Pics are from one week in.
The thumbs are the most pronounced, with them getting progressively better across my hand, with almost-flush little fingers.
Posted before shot (jumpscare) and “usual” shot for context of my nail shape if that helps.
If they fit at the edges, does that mean my nails are too flat for the extensions?
Did the tech just botch it? He did drill away a lot of glue.
Am I a better candidate for a different method?
Would love advice on my next move to continue getting some sort of extensions in the long term, either salon or at home. I should’ve done this ages ago.
Intend to keep this approx length going forward, also have a vast Holo Taco and Mooncat collection I’d like to use overtop of whatever I get (I understand this is ok as long as I don’t remove with 100% acetone?).

Jesus that’s bad. It’s not the shape of your nails that caused this, it’s just a horrible job from the tech and definitely not typical at all. My suggestion would be a removal and new extensions at a new salon with solid reviews. I’m sorry they left you with this.
Yes this tech is awful at GelX and has no idea how to apply it. I have seen so many completely screwed up GelX jobs from salons and I don’t know why this keeps happening. My best guess is that the tech didn’t even try to fit the tips properly and just stuck them on your fingers with huge gobs of gel, which is very wasteful and much more expensive than doing it properly.
My nails aren’t the same shape they were a year ago but I used to have zero natural apex and completely flat nails and GelX was perfect.
None of this is your fault! Terrible application, it probably won’t last long and it exposed you to the gel in an unnecessary way. Find yourself a gel-x independent tech, or any good independent tech and you’ll see the difference!
Oh my god???? What did they do to your poor nails???
Way way way too much glue
Well, the nail tech did a horrible job. And it looks like the nail tech worked in a hurry. Their nail salon has unlimited gel, or the nail tech never had the Apres GelX classes.
At the moment, I recommend coming back to the salon and requesting to clear it up, or even better – ask for a refund. They probably will not last long. But please, do not try to take them off outside of the salon. 🙏
I recommend seeing how it’s going during the service, to stop the process or ask to fix it, or change nail tech to a professional one.
did the tech use longer tips and then file them down? the longer the nail, the higher the apex will be, and thus the inside of the tip will have a larger space to fill. every brand also has tips with a different inner longitudinal arch, some are more suitable for people with arched nail beds, while others are more suitable for people with flatter nail beds. two brands may both fit a nail sidewall to sidewall from the top view, but the down-the-barrel view/inner depth of the two could look very different. the tech should’ve had tips for clients of both types, as well as tips of all different lengths.
Do you mind sharing which polish color that is in the last pic? It’s stunning!
Awful
