NO disrespect to the polish itself which is gorgeous! (….gorgeous in the MIDDLE of a nail… 😝)
I did my left hand glass bead with a 30lb horseshoe + Lego spinner (bonus obligatory “crap it all!!” of ruining the nail you just did on your contraption!)
Right hand I did the “nail buddy” which is 3D printed I think “velvet + cat eye”? I’m probably not doing this right but I didn’t see much cat eye + it dispersed to pretty much “uneven velvet”. Not a huge fan.
I’m feeling a bit critical of all the weird uneven bits. Maybe that’s just how it always is and I notice it more in my hands than other people’s photos? 😆
Technique:
-
base coats, let air dry more thoroughly than usual. Holo Taco peely, Seche base (which SUCKS? Any tips? I don’t own any other ridge filling. it’s streaky and doesn’t self level, how is that a ridge filler)
-
very thin coat of Glitch Lacquer Smokeshow, magnetized maybe 30 sec
-
slightly thicker coat, magnetized 1.5 to 2 min
-
tried my best to float a large bead of Sally Hansen insta-dri & get back to the magnet
-
magnetize top coat 2 full min with a stopwatch to make sure
Weirdos: my glass bead thumb looks like it has a bead and also a “French tip effect”? Middle finger does have a bead. But also this weird “trenches at both sidewalls” look, as if I only put one brush swipe wide of top coat down the middle (which to be clear, I did not)
Ring finger has a weird wrinkly bubbly area along one sidewall that developed later after I had already magnetized top coat a full 2 min. Guess it was still drying and did weird things? Pinky is not too bad but looks almost “scratched” under the bead. Maybe that’s the sucky Seche base underneath.
Right hand has fewer individual oddities other than the dispersal being a bit weird. The ring finger has a similar wrinkly blobby smushed sidewall look, maybe I did put my top coat on unevenly and just couldn’t tell I was doing it.
Pics just to show the nail buddy look: right pinky in the tool has a clear “bent cat eye” look, then the full hand pic you can see it already dispersed to a pretty flat look. I don’t mind some spreading but I feel like I magnetized longer than most people say they do.
I think one thing I need to try is maybe my second coat of polish was too thick so it had more time to do blobby things and had more thickness with the top coat to do even more blobby or wrinkly things?
The Glitch polish has a lovely formula and the magnetic particles are quite fine. I find their brushes weirdly thick but it works ok.
Honestly though today I’m much happier. See the final pics where it takes its true form, which is “after the magnetic has cured overnight, add a layer of DIY jelly, now you have Any Color Magnetic” OMG I’M SO SMUG!!!!!! 😍 last night I was sad and frustrated which is a bummer bc usually painting my nails makes me super happy. But now With Jelly it definitely sparks more joy, so I can be happy with that. 😊

I don’t have any constructive anything to give you, just here in solidarity because I totally felt that NOooOoooOoOoO in the 6th pic.

I love magnetics, but they’re very tricky and I’ve had a hard time with them in the past so I have avoided them for the most part however, I just ordered this tool for the glass bead effect and I’m literally working a set right now and it’s coming out beautifully and it’s really easy to use. I figured it would work great with Joe because you have a lot more time to reset the cat eye if you don’t like it, but it also works really great with lacquer which is what I’m doing right now.
Look what I found on Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/listing/4354160950/the-perfect-glass-bead-nail-magnetic?ref=share_v4_lx
I’ve never done cat eye with velvet–it seems as if they’d cancel out. Can you try just doing velvet?
I’m wondering if your QDTC is too thick? The thicker the coat the longer it will take to cure and the more dispersion you’ll have. Too thick of a top coat could also lead to bubbles. Maybe try a thinner coat of topcoat and you can always add a second coat of it like the next day if you want that thicker glassy look.
I have the same problem and someone posted a video here or on Discord recently with a solution but I can’t find it 😭😭😭 the person in the video somehow “pushed away” the magnetic particles with a bar magnet before doing the velvet effect. I hope someone knows what I’m taking about and can link it.
BUT!!
WITH JELLIES!! 😍

Along with everyone else’s comments and suggestions, I feel like the fine particle magnetics are a bit more unforgiving than more glittery magnetics.
I am going to try a non QDTC to test it out too and see if there is any difference!
the pics prove that you aren’t bad at this. magnetics are really technically demanding. there’s so much room for error, so many variables, such little room for error. they’re very unforgiving if you want all your nails to look exactly the same.
embrace the shiny goodness and forgive yourself any imperfections. keep practicing and you’ll get where you want to be for sure
The “?” And the “noooo >:(” are killing me
