I usually do my mom’s nails, but I’m sick so she went to a salon. She said her tech told her that builder gel doesn’t let the nails breathe like dip powder does. I told her that nails don’t need to breathe and her tech probably just prefers dip powder over gel. What do you all think?

  1. Nails don’t have lungs, they don’t need to breathe. You can keep doing fills with builder gel

  2. I love that the only two answers prior to this were saying opposite things.

Nails are dead. They don’t need to breathe, but there is some benefit to giving them a rest and letting them grow out naturally.

I really think it depends on your tech and nail type. I have strong nails, however when I would get dip the drilling was too much and my nails were paper thin. I took a break for 6 months and switched to regular gel. I ask my tech to soak and scrape off the gel – no drilling at all. I haven’t had any issues ever since. I don’t think nails need to “breathe” but they may need a break to recover from aggressive tech work

The cuticle area on your nail is the only thing that is alive so the nail surface does not need to breathe

It’s not that they need to breathe, it’s more that you don’t want to make them too thin since that can cause more issues.I’ve heard people say that their nails needed to breathe in the context of taking a break from getting their nails done but it’s not actually about them breathing.

But I take it as she meant they need a rest from overworking or overfilling. Which doesn’t make sense since she just put dip over it anyway. So in this context you’re probably right that she prefered dip and she just wasn’t technically proficient in a gel overlay or perhaps just lazy so she did dip instead and gave her an excuse.
