We already know the importance of daily suncream, but what other methods do you use to protect your skin from the sun?

If you've seen any photos of Chinese girls in the summer then you'll know how seriously they take sun protection πŸ˜‚.

Personally I like to dress in cute mini dresses in the summer, but I also need to strike a balance as my skin is very fair and prone to burning.

So here's my strategy to avoid the sun while still enjoying my life and feeling too crazy!

I like to think of it as 'high maintenance to be low maintenance'. When I don't care what I look like, I cover up as much as possible, so that when I do want to expose a lot of skin I can worry about it a bit less because the overall sun exposure is less. (This is probably the wrong mindset but sometimes I like a skimpy summer dress.)

I bought myself a sun protection jacket with a wide brim hat that zips up to the nose, I wear this around my neighbourhood and for casual out tings, walks and exercise. I got light grey and the fabric is so light and breezy it feel really comfortable. I do a lot of 10 kilometre walks so this is perfect for me to keep the sun off my face and the back of my neck and also helps keep cool. I also don't apply any body suncream when I wear these. I have also abused it… thrown it in the washing machine so many times, sweated in it, got suncream all over it, crumpled it up, wore it in the pool too! I've had it for a year and it still comes out perfect after every wash, I wear it in the highest uv with no suncream underneath, even in the pool with high uv reflection and I have no stinging, burning or anything! It's amazing and has saved me so many times.

Now if I do care about what I look like, and I want to wear my cute summer dresses, if it's after peak uv hours, 10am – 4pm, I just go with some body suncream. If it is within peak uv hours, I like a linen shirt and a hat or parasol! I purchased a wide brim hat from a chinese website that isn't straw, it's upf 50 and it protects my entire neck and chest. It's massive and actually cute. I don't mind wearing it as it doesn't flatten my hair too much. Then for shirt I stole one of my dad's linen shirts, it's very crisp, finely woven and quite thick while being breezy. (Men's shirts are just better thicker quality). I read that linen can be 5-20 upf. To be honest I have risked not apply suncream to my arms before with the linen shirt and I've not had any issues, but it is a very high quality shirt so do be careful. I usually don't carry a parasol if I'm with friend who I know would find it annoying weird. But my bestie and my mum share my paleness and need to stay out of the sun, so if i would be with them, I carry a tiny parasol that is upf 50 and we squeeze under it. I've never been burned from the parasol, it works great!

I would if I knew where to buy them. I have a couple items from Amazon but tbh I feel like I’m paying more than I should from there

  2. Maybe a hat at most, but living in the UK the sun is as rare as a panda here

  3. Yes I live in China and the UV rays are no joke here, I wear a UV jacket most of the time, sometimes face cover for long walks

  4. I have a UV umbrella and I love uniqlo’s UV protective items, but the selection is very limited. I think they’re a fantastic option and I wish we had more! Otherwise, regular head protection is also a must, with a large brim ideally.

I wear an SPF rated hat in the car and if I’m going to be outside for more than 10 mins or if it’s been longer than a few hours since I put on sunscreen.

  7. News just broke out recently in China where fabric manufacturers falsified UV protection claims! The fabrics were tested with much lower UV protection results. I would stick with Uniqlo for now.

  8. Avoiding sun during peak hours, sunglasses, big floppy hat, cardigans, longer dresses.

I also have some formfitting longsleeved rashguard UPF tops I wear occasionally. Surprisingly comfy temperature wise and when hiking or when in pool or just around town.

Sunscreen is last line of defense, not the first one.

I do use a lightweight UPF jacket fairly often, but only with sporty outfits. Otherwise it’s a linen shirt. On rare occasion, like the week of 100Β°F weather we had in NYC recently, I’ve used a parasol (really a tiny umbrella I bought just to have in my bag for sudden rain.)

  10. I have UV jackets with cool touch fabric that come with a structured hood/visor and detachable veil. It’s unbranded but you can search for UV cool fabric and see what you get. Pricing I’ve seen for this type ranged from 50CAD-100CAD for all the places I’ve seen them in person in Singapore and Taiwan. I’m sure you can get it cheaper online.

A sunbrella is a must along with the cooling jacket!

If you can’t find the cooling type then the easiest is the Uniqlo or GU UV jackets.
