My friend was raving about the collagen mask, but I've heard mixed reviews on the efficacy of topical collagen vs supplements, and tried it but didn't really feel a difference except for being slimy lolol. Is it more of a moisturizing serum or does it actually penetrate the skin w slower aging results comparable to collagen supplements? https://doi.org/10.3390/antiox9020181 (funded by a company that sells collagen cream) claims topical collagen is still effective w reducing fine lines, moisturizing etc. but conditionally:
"Topical line treatments reduced wrinkles significantly within minutes of the initial application. After three months of treatment, continuous improvements were attributed to the effect of peptides, which have been shown to prevent MMP-induced damage to the extracellular matrix (ECM)"
"However, one of the main problems for topical applications is their low permeability to penetrate the skin. The larger the peptide (beyond six or seven amino acids), the less likely it is to reach the deeper layers [36]. It is well-known that permeation of the outer layers of the skin depends on different factors such as: physicochemical properties of the substance (molecular size, stability, binding affinity, solubility); the time-scale of permeation; thickness and components of the skin; cutaneous metabolism; site, area, and duration of application and properties of the transdermal device [37,38]. Some parameters have been suggested to enhance and secure the delivery of topical products on the skin. These parameters were related to molecular weight below 500 Da, partition coefficient octanol/water between 1 and 3, melting point below 200 °C, aqueous solubility > 1 mg mL–1, and few polar centers [30,38]."
does anyone know enough about it to determine how or if the mediheal collagen masks work? or if there's a better topical product for collagen or if it's all not that great and supplements work better? 🙂
