For context, I came across this article during my research into spicule-containing products. I do not have any connection to the author, nor have I ever purchased or trialed any spicule skincare treatments – this is purely informational. I am interested in hearing your thoughts, regardless of whether you use these products.
The article was published in February of this year (2026) by Wendy Ouriel, a cellular biologist whose background includes a Master of Science in Cellular Biology from California State University, Fullerton; her graduate work was in the field of extracellular matrix biology. She does also own a skincare company, called OUMERE, but I never saw any references to her brand in any of her writing (I did a brief deep dive into her background so I knew who this information was coming from). She has a blog on her company's website, called Bioluminescence, in which she discusses various topics in dermatology and the skincare industry from a scientific perspective, and this is where the article was published.
I've been extremely intrigued by spicule technology ever since it was popularized by VT Cosmetics, especially when several of my favorite skincare vloggers appeared to have good results with them, but I've been hesitant to try them out myself due to the lack of long-term data on their usage and specifically when I heard Dr. Dray's commentary – essentially she really discourages the use of these products because of that lack of knowledge and the potential for serious complications. Although the concept behind spicules seemed logical and made sense to me, I'm wary of the "truthiness" factor as I know that just because something feels like it should be true doesn't mean it necessarily is.
This article really put into words all the vague reservations I've had about spicules in an easy to understand way. I'm much more confident now in my decision to stay away from them for now…I'm sure with so much money riding on them there will be much more research to come, and I'm always open to reevaluating my conclusions if further studies can demonstrate their long-term safety.
Anyway, I just wanted to share this with everyone as I know these products are super popular with a lot of people. Please feel free to share your opinions and thoughts, I'm really interested to hear what you think about all this!
