I mean, like I know they’re meant to paint your nails but since they’re a bit transparent what exactly do you do with them? Are they mostly to do combos with? I’ve always by pass them when I see them since they look pretty boring alone. I got a jelly with flakies in them and now I’m into it but I’m a bit ignorant on how to use them efficiently.

For reference I’ve got on the sheer tint Nightshade by EDM (not my photo)

  1. Some folks like a nekkid look, some people use them to sandwich toppers between, some people use them to do marbling. They’re really versatile.

Different people like different things, jellies tend to have a more glossy/glassy look especially with a good top coat and I like that. I’m also hugely fond of shimmers in a jelly base because they look more dimensional once you build up a few layers.

They also do work well for layering, you can put them over more solid shades or just layer different jellies to get different effects.

But honestly it may just be a matter of preference, I find a lot of glittery shades too busy/fussy and like simpler shimmers and jellies. They’re a bit easier than creme polishes because many can be built up to a good opacity with 3 coats, but you don’t have to fuss with cleanup as much around your cuticles because you don’t get a crisp line like with creams, it sort of blends in.

They’re easy to apply and very forgiving to remove if you mess up. If you want a sheer look, you can do one or two coats, but then three or four gives you an opaque look so there’s versatility. You can also use them for layering to add a tint to a different color.

I thought the same as you when I first got into polish a few months back but now I love jellies. You can get different manicures out of the same polish depending on how many layers you do. You can make different colors by layering different jellies or opaque polishes and glitter. And even if you just use it plain, a good jelly has a squishy-ness and some normal polish doesn’t. I have more jellies than I ever thought I should because they’ve turned out to be one of the more versatile things in this hobby.

I love them for combos and duping polishes! Some people like the transparent look

They can look really squishy-bouncy-juicy. Just one more way to play with light on our nails – I love them during summer when the sun shows off the texture.

They make me thirsty, literally – I love how juicy they look, they look like candy. There’s something about seeing through layers, when nails look like highly polished glass, that just delights me.
