Hi! I want to get your opinions about this issue. I’ve had the same nail tech for about 7 years. She’s so great, honestly, I adore her.
The issue I’m having is this: The last two fills I’ve gotten she’s charged me extra for length. I’ve had longer nails and she’s never charged me for length. I don’t love super long nails as my job involves typing, so I keep them short-ish. The first time she charged me extra I said, “Oh! Are these considered long nails?” She responded, ”They’re on the longer side.”
This time when I was paying I asked the person at the counter “Would these nails be considered long enough for a surcharge?” She responded by laughing and saying, “No, not for that length.“ And then she stopped and said, “Well, maybe. Let me check and see what she charged you.”
When she saw I’d been charged for length she said, “Yeah, I guess those are pretty long.“
I asked if there was a specific length after which they’d be considered long, and she said, “It’s whatever the nail tech decides.”
So I bring it before the jury. Please don’t hesitate to tell me if I’m being an idiot. I definitely want to know if I’m not being fair to my nail tech.
Also, I’m so sorry; I have no idea what I’m doing, so if the pics don’t post, I’ll put them in the comments (if allowed).

7 years? I think maybe you don’t tip your tech enough. If someone was that dedicated to coming to me I would never charge them extra. Ask your nail tech what’s going on.
They aren’t short.

My nails are either around your length or a little longer & I’m not charged extra for length.
I am by no means an expert, but I’d be finding a new tech. This feels icky
But to answer your question; I’d consider these to be a pretty basic length. Nothing special.
certified nail tech here. so charging for length is definitely a thing, as the nail tech is using more product for more surface area. however, not being upfront about it since it seems to be a new thing with her is her not being transparent and i personally see that as a red flag 😬 also don’t listen to the BS of not tipping enough, that’s nonsense and irrelevant to what’s going on. it’s on the nail tech to be clear about pricing with you and ESPECIALLY any changes in pricing.
They are not crazy long, but they are not short either. As a former hairstylist I can understand an extra charge for longer nails/hair because it takes more time/products. But the fact this seem new and she is not transparent about it, give me ick 😬 I was always honest and transparent with my clients, trust is mandatory!
They’re like… normal length. I swear now they’re charging extra for everything, for “length”, for cat eye, for french tip, design i understand but ugh… i just do my own nails atp, took a while to get right but gel x is so easy, and i can do whatever design i want even if it takes me 3h at least it’s not $150+
My nails are the same length as yours and my salon charges me for long.
This is something only the individual nail tech can decide for herself eg. What she considers long and uses extra product/ takes extra time etc. and also what she decides to charge for extra length. I think you’d find a wide range of different answers from nail techs everywhere. That being said let your nail tech know you’d appreciate more transparency on he pricing and you wish she gave you a heads up on price changes.
