Hi! I‘ve been growing my nails for the last months and using more polish to strengthen them. In the last two weeks up to today 4 nails did break – interestingly enough (at least for me) 3 of them on my left (non-dominant) hand and only one on my dominant hand.

Logically I would have guessed it should be the other way around?

Then I thought about shapes, C curve and apex, and I‘ve noticed that the nails that did break for me seem to be flatter in comparison to the others. As the curve gives more strength, is there a way to change or at least influence the shape without using builder gel or anything similar?

I always use a peely base, long lasting base, at least 2 coats of polish. Pics 1+3: Holo Taco Cool Ranch, pic 3: Holo Taco Polar Opposites

Apexes are only going to work with biab and acrylic really, I think biab would really help you. Regular polish won’t do much to help with the growing out process.

  2. Regular polish won’t help particularly strengthen the nails, something like gel or acrylic would do that. But, this could also be caused by if your nails are overly brittle. If you used a lot of strengthening base coat it can cause that as it dries up the nails. Strengthening base coat is good to use a small amount of nails are too flexible, but too much or not when needed causes them to become brittle and more liable to break when they should bend a small amount. You can use some nail oil/vitamin E (Vitamin E is what does the work, jojoba oil can be used to make the consistency easier to work with, but you can use Vitamin E on its own) and put on the tips of your fingers, getting it into the dip between the nail and finger to get it into the nail. To test if it’s the case of your nails being brittle, you can try to gently and lightly push down (towards the underside of your hand) on one of your nails and see if it bends a small amount. If it does, then the nails aren’t brittle, if it doesn’t, that’s an indicator may be.
