(Apologies for the rough photo, my camera is dying. Under the outer edges of my thumbnails I get what seems to be dirt or dead skin cells. In the past I've dug under here with a sewing needle or cuticle tool to clean it but I've stopped doing that as I've learned its unsafe. The problem is, I still get this build up here. Is there a way to safely clean under this portion or my nail? Or a way to prevent this build up? I really dislike the way it looks & it prevents me from using sheer polishes.

Have you tried using a stiff nail brush with soap & water?
Dog groomer here, and this happens to me especially on my thumb nails. So I constantly have dog hair and dirt under my nails at the end of the day. I have a soft bristle toothbrush and I clean under my nails with soap and warm water to loosen up the hair and clean any gunk away. Sometimes there’s still hair stuck so I get an orange stick and gently take it out. Idk if it’s proper but it works for me and I don’t dig too hard
Any sort of jet stream of high pressure water should fix this right up. A sink sprayer, a handheld shower head, a WaterPik if you have one…
Idk I just go for it. I work with sharp tools all day so I’m used to digging under my nails.
