After looking through a bunch of advice on this sub, I purchased (these)[https://amzn.eu/d/45VFUhY] Mont Bleu glass files, which are supposedly etched Czech tempered glass and have great reviews on Amazon. I know most prefer Germaniküre files, but I'm in Ireland and for some reason it seems Amazon.ie doesn't stock them.

However, after less than 2 months of use the grain has already worn completely off the part of the file I use most. The listing says the files have a lifetime guarantee for the filing surface, so I've already reached out to Mont Bleu for a replacement.

I'm a bit shocked at how quickly it wore down, so I'm wondering if anyone else has had this experience with Mont Bleu files or if I'm doing something wrong with my filing. Or was this perhaps not a real Mont Bleu file, even though the listing appears legitimate? Anyone have ideas?

Is it actually worn off? It kind of looks like when the nail dust accumulate on my nail file.

Can you try giving it a rinse under water, and maybe a gentle scrub with a tooth brush?

  2. Can’t speak to the quality of Mont Bleu as I’m yet another Germaniküre user, but this actually looks a little like a buildup of nail dust/residue. If you haven’t already, try rinsing and scrubbing it a bit with a spare toothbrush or something to that effect. This happens to my file pretty frequently tbh.

  3. Like others have said, are you sure this isn’t nail residue/dust! When I saw the photo without reading your caption yet, I thought it was just accumulated nail dust from use. If you haven’t tried cleaning your file yet, try that first and let it dry then check again.

I got some cheap random brand glass file yeaaarrs ago off Amazon that I still use now and have not had the grain worn down. If it really is the file being worn down, then definitely hope the company gives you a refund or a new one!

  4. Sorry I didn’t put this in the post, but to clarify this pic was taken immediately after washing it & scrubbing with a brush. I also thought it was buildup, and the wash/scrub got rid of buildup in other areas, but there was no change in this area.

  5. Do you have particularly strong nails? I’ve seen a handful of posts complaining about glass files wearing down quickly, and they all mentioned having really tough nails.

I found out my glass files aren’t etched. You can tell by looking really closely at where the transition from the handle to the file is. The file should be deeper than the handle, if it steps up from the handle, you have a fake.

Red line to demonstrate because I do not have a strong enough camera to guarantee the difference is visible

  7. I haven’t had this issue with any of my Mont Bleu files. I have two sets scattered about the house, bought directly from the Mount Bleu website about 3 years ago.

  8. If you file with polish on, you might try dipping it in acetone to make sure the polish didn’t meld with it.

The link isn’t working, which makes me think you got an Amazon dupe. I don’t buy most of my skincare from Amazon for this reason!

  10. This happened to both Germanicure files I got from HHC. I heard so many great things about them and then was so upset when I saw it. I ended up wiping them with acetone, just to see if it will help and it went away. Turns out it’s just some polish. Try cleaning it with acetone.

  11. Did you file your nails while they were polished? I tried it once after seeing it recommended and my nail file ended up looking like that.

Had to use acetone to get it off.
