My sister called my grown out natural nails “talons” and “unhygienic”. What do y’all think?

  1. I wish I could grow my nails out like this. Mine are too brittle. Yours look nice, strong and healthy! Nothing unhygienic about them. Not like you’re not washing your hands obviously!

  2. Personally, I think they could definitely use some serious shaping to make them look intentional and not just grown out. But they don’t look unhygienic to me!

They look very healthy! Definitely not unhygienic but maybe because they aren’t shaped and even, they cause her brain to think otherwise.

  4. She’s a hater. Could they stand to be shaped a little? Sure. You clearly take great care of them though, and they absolutely do not look unhygienic.

  5. If you shape them, they would look much better. Without that, they admittedly just look unkempt.

  6. They look very healthy! Like others said, some shaping and clear polish will go a long way for you

You have gorgeous natural nails, but you should definitely file and shape them since genetics has given you so much to work with. they don’t look bad, but they could look so much better with some regular filing.

talons is hilarious, but you have very healthy growth.
as others have said you can get a pretty good, starter & low maintenence thing going with shaping and gloss or even nail oil. look up nail shape charts to get started

  9. They look healthy and hygienic, but they also look like paddles. I’d just learn how to shape them and revel in my gorgeous natural nails.

Im going to agree with an earlier comment that said they could use some serious shaping. But other than that they’re not unhygienic. I love a good long natural nail but I feel like these could definitely use some TLC.

  11. Your nails are obviously extremely healthy 🙂 they just need some shaping/filing to look less ‘messy’-
Kind of like even how healthy hair needs to be brushed and styled to look its best!
What’s important though is how you feel about them, and if you don’t care then I wouldn’t worry about it

Definitely not unhygienic! It’s so easy to get dirt and stuff under your nails and yours are beautiful, just need to be shaped as other have said

Natural, long nails are fine as long as you shape them. A nice clear coat would look great too.

I think they just look like nails, and are long but clean. You have an amazing base for a potentially fantastic French manicure, just a bit of shaping and some top coat and whatnot 🙂 you have the kind of nails I call “perfect canvases” for art.

  15. Theres a reason that health care providers and food service workers are not supposed to have long nails. Long nails are unhygienic in general.

  16. Definitely something a sister would say lol. Not unhygienic but first thought that came to mind was horse hooves. Maybe reshape them so they don’t flare out

  17. You have beautiful nails, that’s the jumping off point. Shaping and filing are what signifies to others that they’re intentional and decorative rather than grown out “claws” that only exist because they haven’t been broken off through trial by combat or running down your dinner on a forest trail.

You really do have great nails, and some great links to shaping, etc. Get some intentionality in there and maybe some polish too. Anything she has to say after is jealousy. Might even be jealousy now tbh. Grab a glass file and crank the jelly-meter up to absurd levels!

You have fantastic nail beds and you’re very blessed they grow in so long and strong. I agree with everyone else here and that if you taper those flared edges in a bit and give them more uniform shaping, they’ll look much prettier and more intentional. They definitely don’t look unhygienic to me, though. They’re very clean and the tips are nice and white. I think squoval or almond would be nice on you 🙂

My first thought was shaping and filing like everyone else on this thread! I’d also probably add buffing to the nail so there’s a bit more smoothness and shine to the nail. Can buy a cheap tool (spongey looking thing) at your local drug store! Used to love buffing my nails when I was in high school and my mom didn’t allow polish back in the day lol

  20. I want to clip them soooo bad!!!!! Overall they clean and healthy to me, not talon like at all.
    Just really really clipable lol

You have super healthy nails. I want to see the after photo if you decide to shape them!

I would get a good glass nail file and stop using clippers. Bliss Kiss makes a great one. Be careful, cheap ones have glued on grit that’s comes off. A real glass file will last pretty much forever as long as you clean it and don’t drop it.

It looks like you’ve been in a coma for six months and no one tended to them. With that said, they look healthy and could be a flex with a little effort!

you need to file them slightly narrower and more evenly on the ends. they’re beautifully healthy but look unkempt
