While doing a holo skittle last night, I noticed that putting a top coat on top of one color really dulled the holo effect.
First pic is with top coat, second is with a fresh coat or color on top (since I didn’t think to take a pic before adding top coat when I was doing my mani). Third is with top coat on my nail but compared to the swatch ring.
It only dulled this one color, none of the others. Strange! Has anyone else seen this before? Is it due to the top coat or the color, I wonder?

This is a common issue with purple polishes – something about purple pigment specifically. When you put topcoat over them it pulls the purple pigment up above the holo (or as the case may be, flakie or glitter or whatever is in the polish besides purple pigment) so it dulls the effect.
If you use a water based topcoat and then a QDTC this should solve the issue! DRK Seal Glaze is also supposed to fix this but I don’t have that so can’t speak to how effective it is.
I’m vaguely speculating, but aren’t there some purple pigments that tend to bleed into the topcoat? 🤔 That might explain why this holo polish got dulled by the topcoat whereas the other holos were not affected.
Pretty. Wish I had seen this before I did my french mani.
Emily de Molly also makes a water-based topcoat. My order just came, so I haven’t tried it yet.
