Keith Haring was an openly gay artist who became famous due to his iconic pop doodle style. Lighthearted images that also had social messages were his specialty. Much of Haring's work advocated for safe sex and for a greater government response to the AIDS epidemic. When he was diagnosed, he created the slogan SILENCE = DEATH to help push visibility hoping to get the government to acknowledge the epidemic instead of ignoring it. His last piece of art before his death was named "Unfinished Painting" as a statement on his life ending abruptly.

It was fitting to bring out this Keith Haring piece now that our current US government is dismantling the research funding and domestic and global awareness campaigns that save lives. This year was the first year that the White House did not acknowledge World AIDs day, a huge statement of ignorance, and fear through willful silence.

We cannot be silent. We cannot forget those who died due to silence. This isn't a "gay" disease, and the hatred and bigotry that fuels the stigma and silence must be called out. Over 40 million people globally are living with HIV, with new infections exploding in Africa and impoverished communities. The more silence and stigma from our officials, the more spread occurs. Ignoring communities because of bigotry literally kills people.  We must demand better from our institutions and not regress, not just for the future generations' safety, but for the memory of a generation that was killed off due to that same silence.

  2. This is so, so beautifully done.

I know and love that painting. What a touching and powerful tribute. Silence is not an option.
