Burned the top edge off. I am clearly new to using a lighter to light candles while having long nails (was a chronic nail biter until last year)! Fellow long-nailed folks, how do you navigate using a lighter to light candles? Or do you just use matches instead?

Could you get a long stem lighter? I have one that has an extendible neck and a button to light it
Ah yes. The trick is to turn the whole lighter a quarter turn to the right (assuming you’re right-handed) and use the side of your thumb to turn the spark-maker instead of the end where the lovely long nail is now. Just one of many actions you’ll be using the sides of your fingertips for instead of the way you did them before. (Fellow late-nail-grower here😉) Relearning using a Bic lighter is easier than relearning to thread a tiny needle! Worth it, though: look at that lovely thumb!
I’ve NEVER done this before bc my nails are so short, but it doesn’t surprise me that this has happened to somebody lol.
Nitrocellulose, the main component of lacquer-based nail polish, is HIGHLY flammable, even when the polish is dry.
Might want to look at a long-necked lighter or a BBQ lighter, as others have suggested

I flip the candle I never have the lighter completely upside down
So… how flammable IS a painted nail? Did it flare up like a grease fire? Whooshing sounds? Clouds of Smoke? How did you put out the fire?
