I’m talking about people who normally get their nails done in a salon and own maybe 5 bottles of drugstore polish at home. The people who don’t use base or top coat. Maybe they’ve been getting shellac or acrylics for years and think regular polish is not for them. They are curious but cannot see the point of a polish that costs more than £10.
Would you gift them a bottle of an indie brand you think they would like? Is it considered a gateway drug?
I have a colleague whom I want to give Mooncat Shroomdom and HoH, but I worry it will be like giving a bachelorette a sex swing instead of a pair of handcuffs. Should I start with something more entry level instead?

I haven’t been in this situation before but I think it would be fine! I’d just avoid any tricky polishes or any that require extra tools like magnetics. Of course you can wear them unmagnetized but it’s just not the same.
It’s funny because I have said before that I wouldn’t recommend House of Hades to indie newbies. I posted myself wearing it to my FB and a lot of my friends really liked it, but then was left wondering how to explain that it’s one of those that will need regular thinner, a generous topcoat if you don’t want texture (I use a glitter grabber too) and that I found it a bit of a pain in the ass to apply, even though the results were worth it. From the point of view I don’t want to recommend something that needs extra steps or patience!
I don’t own shroomdom but I imagine it’s probably easier to apply! That huge paragraph was not me saying you shouldn’t gift indie polish to non indie wearing friends, I do it all the time! If it’s a polish with special conditions (like I gifted a solar to my sister) I tell them about it and how it works (but I also tend to infodump so I mean I guess it depends how far down the rabbit hole they’re willing to go and I’m probably not a great example)
I don’t think I would, honestly, unless they express a lot of interest in doing their own nails at home. Someone who regularly gets their nails done at a salon likely has a tech they love and enjoys the process and the finished product. A lot of times they don’t have the time or desire to start doing their nails at home.
My friends and family members always compliment my nails, but some are regular salon goers and the others don’t have the desire to learn to do their own nails. That’s perfectly fine! I love this hobby, but it’s a time sink and it’s not cheap.
I have gifted indies to newbies before. However, I choose “easy” polishes. Nothing too textured, thick, sheer, etc. That way, they aren’t put off of them right away.
there are worse addictions you could put someone on to, but then I’m the person who gifts newlyweds a sex swing.
