Someone asked in another post recently about little snaggy bits left from filing nails. This question comes up from time to time and I always feel like words are a little inadequate for describing, so here's a video, since I can't seem to post a video as a comment in reply.

Any type of file filing any type of material produces a ragged edge layer called a burr, and you need to file from a different direction to get it off. After you have the length and shape you want (or periodically as you go along if you're filing down a lot,) file off the top edge burr by going off the edge of your nail. You may be able to get at the underside edge burr with the pointy tip of the file or the corner on a buffing block, but I use a glass manicure stick for this by spinning the curved etched surface under the edge.

Products:

  • Mont Bleu glass nail file
  • Bona Fide Beauty glass cuticle stick (this brand is not a good glass stick if you want it for cuticle pushing, as the edge is not precise enough and the flat end surface is too coarsely etched and would damage your nail plate, but for my purpose, it's fine)
  • Base coat: KBShimmer Stay Put Hydrating Base Coat
  • Colour: ILNP Spotlight, 3 coats
  • Top coat: Essie Gel Couture

  1. Omg I need that glass stick. I have a much harder time getting the burr off of my toes with a buffer. Are there any other things the stick is useful for?
