Hi, I’m very new to nails. I have 0 clue what to do when this happens. Make it short and wait for it to grow out? Apply some kind of magic ointment to patch it? Please teach me your ways.

I think I broke in during my squats. I PR’d, but at what cost?

  1. Orly Nail Rescue Kit (available from Amazon). Works like a dream for a break in that area of the nail – ask me how I know.

Tea bag patch, wait for it to split again, tea bag patch, rinse and repeat 😀

  3. Ugh I hate when that happens! I bought the ORLY rescue kit when I did the exact same thing to my thumb, only way further down somehow. Some people also use silk wraps.

I recommend following the orly instructions and painting/dipping the whole nail, rather than just the crack. When you just do the affected area you end up with a lumpy bit and you can end up scratching up your nail plate trying to buff it smoother. I usually do one coat over the whole nail, then another over the break for safety, then buff the entire thing smooth.

Source: I currently have a thumbnail where the entire nail snapped off and I glued it back on with tweezers and orly dipped it because I cannot bear it when I touch things and there’s no nail to stop textures from touching the tip of my thumb.

  4. I use nail glue that is applied with a brush and then put on Essie strong start on top once the glue is dry. Then just polish on normally and hope for the best. Has worked really well for me so far.

I use press ons to hide/protect breaks until the grow out far enough for me to trim it off along with the entire free edge. But that’s just me.

There are products specifically made to help patch breaks like this so you can maintain your length for as long as possible. I see the Supernail Silk Wrap one mentioned frequently but don’t have experience using it

    Cuss.

But for real, either trim my nail or patch it. Depends on my mood and which hand. If it happens a lot, the silk nail wraps with mail glue are the best, the tea bag method is great in a pinch but isn’t as durable.

I cut it off because I don’t trust my own repair abilities to stand up to all the stuff I do at work.

But my job is very hands-on. For people who aren’t in blue collar work, I think repairs might work better.

  8. My nail literally broke like this a few days ago. And this morning I bumped my finger, so now the break is longer 🥲 I just put bandaids on it but the teabag method is making me curious

  9. 2 layers of nail glue and 1-ply tissue. It’s easier for me to cut up tissue vs. a tea bag 😅

  10. I personally cut the nail short and let it grow out. Other people patch it up with teabags but I haven’t mastered that technique and am honestly too lazy to figure it out 😆 I also don’t let my nails grow that long, cut and file them usually once a month so am less attached to the length. I haven’t had this kind of break in ages though! Always wearing nail polish has made my nails so much better

  11. I get breaks like this all the time! Seconding the rec for Orly Nail Rescue. The only thing I’ve found that helps prevent it (besides moisturizing/oiling) is keeping my thumbnails shorter.

    Here’s the method I use:

    1) trim your nail as short as possible

    2) cut two layers of a teabag to fit *the whole nail*. You don’t want any overhang onto the skin, though.

    3) apply layer of nail glue or superglue (superglue lasts longer but it’s an acrylate so don’t get any on your skin)

    4) press first teabag firmly into glue for 30 seconds. Somehow do this without gluing your other finger to the whole works, which is hard.

    5) apply a second layer of superglue

    6) press second teabag firmly into glue for 30 seconds

    7) let dry for a few minutes

    8) paint like normal: two coats of polish and a topcoat.

This technique basically builds a cast on top of the break and as long as the nail glue/superglue layer at the bottom bonds well, the whole thing will stay for a week or two, giving the split time to grow out.

Tea bag or silk wrap patch with nail glue, and hope to hold off on trimming the nail as long as possible 😅

I use the orly nail repair kit i got a million years ago. its basically glue and some sort acrylic powder. Put glue on nail. Dip the offender in the powder, then file away.

  15. You can buy a nail wrap kit to hold it together until it grows out. I did one on my father and he loved it.

  16. Go to salon and get structure gel placed over it. It’s about 10 bucks and allows the break to grow while keeping same nail shape. Ive done this for 2 nails. In terms of upkeep, you can go every month or month and half to redo. I have tried the patch before and that lasted 2 days max and break would get worse.
